FAQ

For most students, before or during your freshman year of college.  If you want an engineering degree you need to start in your first semester of your freshman year.  If you decide on business, you can usually wait until your sophomore year to declare a major within the business field.  If you decide on a general liberal arts degree you may be able to wait until starting your junior year to declare a major.  If you are going to graduate school (or medical, dental, law) you need to check their specific requirements.

When do I have to choose a major?

Most students are not ready at 17 or 18.  However our system forces students to decide at this time.  If a student can take a “GAP year’” to gain some experience in order to make a better decision later, that should be a good decision.
